I’ve been teaching at SANKEI for over four years now. Since March 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. This is my first time doing any sort of tutorial, as I’ve never had prior experience teaching anyone. In addition to teaching students, I entered SANKEI to build rapport and camaraderie, hoping to someday work as an English teacher in Japan.
Not only did I learn so much about Japan’s culture and have met wonderful students, but I also learned more about being a good tutor. I’ve managed well, developed my teaching style as I saw fit, and stuck with it until now.
I approached my classes in a more laid-back with a slight touch of candidness tone, as it creates a more engaging atmosphere and a more memorable experience. It’s like sharing stories with my students.
Of course, there were moments when stress would ensue. Sure, some students would show slight disinterest, but I saw it as something normal and could not be helped. It didn’t matter as long as we stayed kind to each other. Being kind is really what connects all of us. It is incredible to me to find mutual understanding behind a language barrier.
With complete confidence, I’ve had no unpleasant encounters.
Most important of all are my students. I treasure them. I’ve met many kinds of people and have become regulars. We’ve shared many stories and talked about hobbies, interests, and aspirations. Seeing and hearing people’s different experiences, whether good or bad or worrying or exciting, is endearing. I’ve gotten to know them a little, as they have with me.
I hope they’ve enjoyed my classes, even if it’s just for a little while. I am very thankful to them; because of them, I stay motivated to improve as a teacher.
